RFID used in National Palace Museum

National Palace Museum, Taipei

The National Palace Museum with many high quality pieces from Neolithic ages to the late Qing Dynasty is one of largest art museum in the world, located in Taipei City, Taiwan. Following the trend of applying Information Technology to Reinvent Government, NPM produces remarkable digitalized asset through carring out Internet Community Technology. Besides, NPM gets distinct from the previous stereotype and also runs a modified business model.

RFID System

With the use of Radio-frequency identification, RFID, becomes more and more popular, its role is important for both internal and external management in museum management. RFID is the use of a wireless non-contact system that uses radio-frequency electromagnetic fields to transfer data from a tag attached to an object, for the purposes of automatic identification and tracking.

RFID in Internal Management

On the one hand, because of a permanent collection of 693,507 pieces of ancient Chinese artifacts and artworks in NPM, RFID system helps to classify collections for NPM with a lot of work. Especially, NPM must have many exhibitions regularly and exchage its collections with the other museum. It involves a large amount of work to manage for its collections, including recording the information for the movement of them in the warehouse. RFID helps NPM to set up database with files for the pieces in order to strengthen the management of the museum pieces. After standardizing the current digital deposits, it increased the efficiency for searching and checking work with saving much time for the staff on collection management. In addition, it provides the consistent management for the whole digital museum networks. As a result, NPM could take the security of its collctions very seriously and have a range of measures designed to protect collection items from inadvertent or deliberate harm because of the use of RFID system.

RFID in External Management

On the other hand, with NPM expanding businesses with the popular periphery products become popular by the increasing number of visitors, the use of RFID is used for the retail business of museum. With anti-theft RFID tags on every product, the sale department can call up a snapshot of its sales and inventory, or track incoming deliveries regularly. As PDAs joined RFID system it improves boost workers’ performance. Besides, RFID could record each trade information and statistic the number of sales. The data from RFID helps the museum shop to identify the most popular and unpopular goods, so that the sales department of NPM could make the business strategies and sales targets for coming period.

  1. Hey Coco, thanks for your post. I have found it very interesting and relevant. Nevertheless I want to share my thoughts with you about using RFID in the hospitality industry.
Talking about hospitality industry, where museums take a weighty part, it can be said that it is a totally customer and service oriented industry; moreover the hospitality industry has always been watched closely by customers. In my opinion, it is very essential for the museums to provide the best in quality services for optimum customer satisfaction and thereby build a strong image. That is why I think that RFID is taking the hospitality industry by storm, especially when the technology is tied to social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. By linking RFID with Facebook, for example, attendees of museums can share information with friends and family instantaneously. Furthermore, the social media aspect of RFID provides a fun new twist to the technology. But it is also performing an important function behind the scenes – working to help RFID gain greater acceptance from consumers. In my opinion the main goal of RFID technology in the hospitality industry is for RFID to be a tool to improve service quality, customer satisfaction, market share, and profitability. High quality services improve customer satisfaction, which in turn ultimately enhances profitability of organizations. 2. Thanks Ksenia. Your opinion is very interesting. I never consider abou the combination with networks with partners for regular transactions and networking and open distribution of products through the internet before. but your points about social networking service, such as Facebook and Twitter seems a very good idea.

Actually, i focus on the database and knowledge management system in museum, and the use of RFID is an important application of ICT in the my example.

But I think database and knowledge management system has be used in the F&B industry, hasn't it? The use of R-keeper is an example of database and knowledge management in restaurant. With this system you can analyze important data of the system, reviewing video records. While doing that, hi-tech system would synchronize the text of financial transactions with according video records automatically.

In my opinion, RFID could be used in the F&B industry as well, because there is inventory in each restaurant. In order to manage the warehouses well, RFID could help the staff works efficiently.

  3. Hi Coco,
thank you for your interesting post.
I think that RFID might be helpful for airports, for airlines or hotels: called “smart infrastructure.” In addition to automatically taking inventory, RFID readers on “smart carts,” baggage tracking, and employee check-in. RFID sensors could even be used to identify water leaks, set heating and cooling triggers based on occupancy, or automatically operate hallway lights, blinds and screens.

I doubt that hotels will label guests with RFID very soon, but RFID key tags could enable many of these “smart infrastructure” events. Certainly tagging luggage would be most useful in allowing airlines and hotels to better control the identification of bags as they move through the travel system.
Finally i would like to say RFID has the potential in any hospitality sector.
On the other hand there are security risks involved with an RFID similar to any wireless system. Viruses can be programmed into RFID chips, compromising the entire system. Proper database configuration can minimizes such risks.

  4. Thank Lina.

RFID could be used in many fields. Indeed, there is the number of inventory, such as food materials and beverage in restaurants and rooms linen in hotel, need to manage. Sometimes, pilferage happens in the negligence of warehouse management. Thus, the use of RFID could help to manage the warehouse in tourism and hospitality industry, not only in the logistics or retail industries with a larger number of inventory.

I like your point about the security issue of RFID. Because it depends on the computers with softwares, it has the risk of virus. Hence, the database and knowledge management should attract more attention on this potencial risk.

  5. Hi, CoCo
Initially, application areas of the RFID were generally in these industrial such as retail sector, supply chain management, warehouse management, logistics, manufacturing etc. But now it has a wide range of applications in hospitality and tourism industry to enhance their operations and marketing and help provide new and improved services for guests.
In hospitality industry, the RFID has been used for inventory control and tracking of alcohol, pool towels, linens, uniforms ,costumes and luggage. Furthermore, the usage of RFID for personal identification helps employees greet guests by name and serve them better. The data stored by RFID have been used to improve marketing and operations that benefit both companies and guests
Another use of RFID in the hospitality industry is the RFID door lock, which allows for contactless guest room entry and provides updates to the front desk. Using RFID door locks, hotels are able to maximize guest satisfaction and stay ahead of their competitors. Also, it provides guests with a greater sense of security.

  6. Actually, an effective knowledge management approach can deliver a range of significant benefits
    • managed access to knowledge reduces search time and shortens learning curves, facilitating new product development and innovation
    • within the organisation, a KM approach encourages and facilitates smarter, enhanced problem-solving techniques
    • managed access to knowledge can provide a DMO with the ability to respond more rapidly to customers, technology and markets
    • across the DMO, KM systems contribute to more efficient business processes
    • within the DMO, KM enhances staff performance by encouraging knowledge sharing, mutual trust and, as a result, reducing staff turnover
    • a KM system allows a DMO to leverage and use its intellectual assets
    • knowledge management encourages partnering and the sharing of core competencies with suppliers, vendors, customers and other external stakeholders.
